• The European Languages Framework describes what a learner is supposed to be able to do in reading, listening, speaking and writing at each level.

BASIC USER

DELF A1
This level recognises basic knowledge. It is the most basic level at which a language is used, called the “discovery” stage. At this stage, the learner can interact in a simple way: he/she can speak about him/herself and his/her immediate environment.

DELF A2 
Based on the same principle: it recognises the linguistic competency of a basic user, considered as a social actor. The candidate can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring the most common polite phrases and exchanges of information.

INDEPENDANT USER

DELF B1 
At this level, the user becomes independent. He/she can maintain interaction: he/she can understand and maintain a discussion and give his/her opinion. He/she is capable of dealing with situations likely to arise in daily life.

DELF B2
A B2 user has a degree of independence that allows him/her to construct arguments to defend his/her opinion, explain his/her viewpoint and negotiate. At this level, the candidate has a degree of fluency and spontaneity in regular interactions and is capable of correcting his/her own mistakes.

PROFICIENT USER

DALF C1 
Language users at level C1 are independent. They can express themselves fluently and spontaneously. They have a large vocabulary and can choose the appropriate expression to introduce their comments. They can produce clear, well-structured discourse without hesitation and which shows controlled use of structures.

DALF C2 
C2 users’ proficiency in the language is illustrated by precision, appropriateness and fluency of expression. C2 candidates are capable of using the language for academic and advanced-level purposes.

• This course will prepare you for the TCF-ANF  to become a French citizen. 

​

There are two compulsory tests:

– Oral comprehension. Length of the test: 30 minutes

– French oral. Length of the test: 15 minutes

At present, the “TCF for access to French nationality” certificate is only valid for an application for French nationality. It cannot be used to register, for example, at a French university or in an immigration application for Quebec.

Warning: 

​

Holders of DELF B1, DELF B2, DALF C1 and DALF C2 are exempted from the execution of this test.

Holders of a certificate of completion of the TCF general speaking test, validating level B1 or higher in each of two tests of listening and speaking comprehension are also exempted from the execution of the test.

 

But again, please double check as the law and requirements can change quickly.

• vocabulary expansion

 

To be admitted to a French University International students are required to provide proof of their level of competency in French by taking a test.

 

The best known test is DELF (diplôme d’études en langues française/level B2) but you can also take one of the following exams:

• DALF: diplôme approfondi de langue française

• TCF : test de connaissance du français

• TEF : Test d’évaluation du français

• DFP: diplôme de français professionnel

• DHEF: diplôme de hautes études françaises

• DULF: diplôme universitaire de langue française

At present (but please double check!), you are not required to take an exam if you are coming to study in France via an exchange programme (e.g.: Erasmus) or if you hold a French Baccalaureate because you studied in a French school abroad.
